June 6th, Pushkin's Birthday and Russian Language Day!

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on Monday establishing June 6 officially as the Day of the Russian Language.

Medvedev said in the decree that to make the official Day of the Russian Language and celebrate it annually on June 6 is perfectly fitting, as it coincides with the birthday of the great Russian poet and founder of the modern Russian literary language, Alexander Pushkin.

Furthermore, Medvedev said that the decree was passed with the intent "to preserve, support, and develop the Russian language as an all-nation heritage of the people of the Russian Federation, a tool for international communication and an inseparable part of cultural and world heritage."
